Q: Should I Stay or Should I Go?
A: While the overwhelming majority of seniors would prefer to live their lives out at home, they often don’t realize that staying home can be a costly care option. The decision to stay or move requires careful consideration of financial, location, and care needs.
The Cost of Staying Home
The first question to ask is, “What can I afford?” According to the 2023 Genworth Cost of Care Survey, 20 hours per week of in-home care by a health aide costs $2,687 per month. For 24-hour care, that number jumps to $22,569 per month. Home care costs can be on par with some senior living communities, so it’s essential to weigh the affordability (and desirability) of both options early in your decision-making process.
Assisted Living Communities
The average age of an assisted living resident in Florida is 87, as many seniors delay moving into care communities until health issues force the change. In addition to activities and socialization, assisted living communities offer different care options commensurate with their license and services. Some provide specialized memory care. If you have specific medical or personal requirements, choose a community that can meet those needs long-term.
Location Matters
Seniors commonly choose a living arrangement within 15 miles of their current home. Many also prefer to live near family, although a move of any distance will mean changing doctors, pharmacies (really everything) — which can make for a more difficult transition. Ask about transportation services to doctor’s appointments and errands. Consider whether the location will meet your needs now and in the future, as your mobility or health conditions change.
Aging in Place
If you prefer to stay at home, there are resources available to help you maintain independence as you age! Private duty caregivers and care management services can coordinate care, provide assistance with daily activities, medical needs, and keep families in the loop. With the right support, it’s possible to age safely and comfortably in your own home.
Making the Right Decision
Whether you decide to stay at home or move to a senior living community, it’s essential to plan ahead. Delaying the decision or waiting until a health crisis can limit your options. Take time to assess your financial situation, care needs, and desired location. Choosing the right long-term care scenario is an important decision, and the best time to make it is when plenty of options are available.
