Q: What Can I Expect from Medicare in 2027?

During Medicare Open Enrollment, millions of older adults and individuals with disabilities face a changing Medicare landscape. The upcoming 2027 calendar year brings critical adjustments to costs, plan availability, and prescription drug benefits. Whether you rely on Original Medicare, a stand-alone Part D drug plan, or a private Medicare Advantage plan, understanding these updates is vital for protecting your health—and your budget. Read on for the most significant changes for 2027.

Rising Premiums and Deductibles

For beneficiaries enrolled in Original Medicare, out-of-pocket costs for outpatient care are trending upward. The standard monthly premium for Medicare Part B—for doctor visits, preventive care, and medical equipment—is projected to rise to $209.50, while the annual Part B deductible will increase to $292. Higher income beneficiaries will likewise see adjustments to their income-related surcharges.

Part D Restructuring and Higher Caps

The prescription drug landscape continues to change following federal legislative overhauls. In 2027, the absolute limit on what an individual can pay out-of-pocket for covered Part D prescription medications will increase to $2,400. While this cap offers protection against catastrophic drug costs, the maximum allowable standard deductible for drug plans is also rising to $700. Meanwhile, temporary federal premium stabilization subsidies are set to expire. Analysts expect resulting shifts in monthly premiums and drug pricing for stand-alone drug plans.

Medicare Advantage and Plan Choice

The biggest disruption for many seniors in 2027 involves Medicare Advantage (Part C) options. While average national premiums for many plans stay relatively steady, prominent national carriers are scaling back their service regions—which means some popular plans will no longer be available. If your current Medicare Advantage plan is being discontinued, or its network of doctors is shrinking, you should receive a formal “Annual Notice of Change” in the mail. DEFINITELY read this document immediately to see if a new option might be needed.

Expanding Drug Price Negotiations

Finally – good news! Federal drug price negotiations have expanded—impacting prices for 15 additional high-cost medications in 2027. The expanded list includes treatments for diabetes, cardiovascular health, cancers, neurological, mental health, gastrointestinal and immunity disorders. Users of the specific drugs should see some financial relief. The Canadian Drugstore, GoodRx and SingleCare remain price lowering options.

Educate Yourself During Open Enrollment

“Just renewing” could be a costly mistake. Log into medicare.gov before December 7 and make sure your drugs are still covered and your plan isn’t getting more expensive or dropping your favorite doctor. Unsure what to do? Check the event calendar at OneSeniorPlace.com. Medicare seminars are going on now at One Senior Place in Viera and Altamonte Springs.
