Lisa Peake – FLORIDA TODAY
Q: I am a retired U.S. veteran. Can you point me to local resources?
A:In Brevard County, we are fortunate to live among many men and women whose lives are marked by service and sacrifice. The veterans who wore our nation’s uniform are also our neighbors, friends, parents, and grandparents. While Veterans Day gives us a moment each year to pause and say “thank you,” the truth is that appreciation for veterans should extend far beyond a single day on the calendar.
Many veterans quietly navigate the challenges of past military service long after discharge. They may have health concerns, housing needs, struggle navigating benefits, or simply finding connection and community. Thankfully, the Space Coast offers a wide range of resources dedicated to supporting veterans and their families at every stage of life.
Locally, veterans can access care and assistance through the VA Outpatient Clinic in Viera, which provides primary care, urgent care, mental health services, and referrals to specialized care. The Brevard County Veterans Services Office is another invaluable resource, helping veterans and surviving spouses understand and apply for benefits like compensation and pensions. For those seeking counseling, peer support, or help with readjustment, the Vet Center serves combat veterans and their families in a community-based setting.
Beyond healthcare and benefits, Brevard County is also home to organizations that focus on connection and honor. Space Coast Honor Flight works to recognize veterans by providing an accompanied trip to Washington D.C., while local nonprofits and service organizations offer everything from housing support to caregiver assistance. Still, many veterans are unaware of what is available to them—or may not know where to start.
That is why community events matter.
One Senior Place is proud to host “Every Day Is Veterans Day” on Friday, February 27 in Viera—an event designed to bring appreciation and resources together under one roof. In June, a separate, similar event will be held in Altamonte Springs. A free lunch will be provided at both gatherings, where veterans will have the opportunity to hear a keynote speaker, meet local organizations, ask questions, learn about available services and engage with others who understand their experiences. Family members and caregivers are also encouraged to attend. RSVP online at www.OneSeniorPlace.com/events or by calling 321-751-6771.
Whether you are a veteran yourself, care for one, or simply want to learn more about the support available in our community, come join us. It’s a chance to be recognized, to be informed, and to be reminded that your service continues to be valued—today and every day.
