Q: How Can I Get Organized for Tax Season?

A: Tax season is here — and it can feel overwhelming. But with a little preparation, you can approach it with confidence and maybe even uncover some savings along the way! Here’s a handy guide to help seniors get ready for the upcoming tax season.

Checklist of Documents You’ll Need

Staying organized can save time and reduce stress when it’s time to file. Here’s a checklist of essential documents to gather:

  • Income Statements: You may get multiple 1099 forms. Look for a 1099 SSA from Social Security, 1099R from your pensions and yet another one for interest or dividends. If you are still working, be on the lookout for your W-2.
  • Deduction and Credit Documentation: Be sure to have your medical and dental expense receipts, including any notices from Social Security about your Part B premiums. You should get a form from your mortgage company with interest. Don’t forget to have your property tax bill available. If you give to charities, that can also be a helpful deduction. You should also have last year’s tax return handy for comparison.

Tax Credits and Deductions for Seniors: The amount of tax you pay is dependent on income from all sources. One of the perks of being a senior is eligibility for certain tax breaks. You get a higher standard deduction if you are over 65. Elderly and disabled persons meeting certain income limits might qualify for a special credit. If your only source of income is Social Security– you may not owe any taxes.

Free Tax Prep for Seniors

Yay! Seniors don’t have to tackle tax season alone. Free resources include:

  • Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE): Sponsored by the IRS, this program offers free tax help for people aged 60 and older. Volunteers are trained to handle issues like pensions and retirement-specific questions. https://irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep/
  • AARP Foundation Tax-Aide: In person or online, this service provides free tax assistance to anyone, especially those 50 and older.  https://www.aarp.org/money/taxes/aarp_taxaide/locations/
  • IRS Free File: If you’re comfortable filing on your own, the IRS offers free software for those with a simple tax situation. https://www.irs.gov/file-your-taxes-for-free

Avoid Tax Scams

Unfortunately, tax season can attract scammers. Always verify the identity of anyone calling you.  The IRS will NOT demand payment over the phone or in an email. Keep sensitive information private by purchasing a shredder or finding a shredding event in your community.
