Does a nursing home take your pension and Social Security?

I've been helping my mom look into nursing homes for her aunt, and we're trying to figure out how to pay for it. I know Medicare doesn't cover long-term stays, and Medicaid seems complicated. But what about Social Security and pensions? Can a nursing home take your pension or Social Security benefits to pay for care? Or are there protections in place to keep that money for the resident?
